Oil flowed through the 1,287 km Trans Alaska Pipeline System for the first time on 20 June 1977. For the three years prior, following approval of the Trans Alaska Pipeline Authorisation Act in 1974, more than 70,000 people worked to construct the pipeline. Over 30 years on, Pipelines International looks into the history of this feat of engineering over the harsh conditions.
