China National Petroleum Company (CNPC) has commenced construction on a 244.8 km section of the South Xinjiang natural gas pipeline project, extending from Kashi to Zepu, West China.
With a planned gas transmission capacity of 1.4 Bcm/a, the Kashi – Zepu pipeline is expected to become operational in late 2010.
As part of the South Xinjiang natural gas project, CNPC plans to construct a 2,500 km network of natural gas pipelines, comprising six trunk pipelines and six branch pipelines, in Kashgar Prefecture, Hotan Prefecture and Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture over the course of the next two to three years.
The new pipelines will provide 25 counties and 21 farms located in these prefectures with access to natural gas.
