Under the agreement, these parties will jointly pursue an initiative sponsored by the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum which seeks to secure rights for Eni to acquire gas transmission capacity in the Arab Gas Pipeline system, in accordance with the intergovernmental measures already present among the countries involved with the pipeline.
The 1,200 km, 36 inch diameter Arab Gas Pipeline is currently used to export Egyptian gas to Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, and may be expanded and interconnected to other gas transport systems in the future.
Over 1,000 km of the pipeline has already been completed in four stages, the first of which was completed in 2003, with further extensions planned from Syria to Turkey and to the Iraqi gas grid.
Commissioning of the entire pipeline, which has a projected gas capacity of 10.3 Bcm/a, is planned for 2011.
