Nord Stream AG has received the last of the permits required to commence construction on its 1,223 km natural gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea.
The Regional Administrative Agency for Southern Finland has approved Nord Stream’s plan to construct, operate and maintain its gas pipeline along a 374 km route through Finland’s exclusive economic zone.
The Finnish Water Permit complements the earlier permit granted by the Finnish Government for the Nord Stream project to use Finnish waters.
The Nord Stream consortium plans to start constructing the first pipeline in April 2010 and to start transporting gas in late 2011.
When completed in 2012, Nord Stream’s twin pipeline system will have a capacity of 55 Bcm/a of gas.

The Nord Stream Pipeline will transport gas from Russia to Germany where it will join the European energy grid.
