Urucu – Coari – Manaus pipeline supports Amazon Power Project
Wed, 3 February 2010
The recently commissioned Urucu – Coari – Manaus pipeline will deliver natural gas to fuel Breitener Energy’s Amazon Power Project, which will see natural gas engines replace heavy fuel oil engines at its Amazonian power plants.
Breitener is converting its UTE Mattos and UTE Fran heavy oil plants to use natural gas to lower its greenhouse emissions output.
GE Jenbacher low-emission gas engine generator sets will be installed at each plant site and generate a combined 120 MW of power for the city of Manaus.
The 661 km trunkline was put in service by Petrobras in November 2009 and connects Urucu to Manaus and has seven branches that will supply the cities of Coari, Codajas, Anori, Anama, Caapiranga, Manacapuru, and Iranduba with natural gas.
