Nord Stream 2 awards Boskalis JV €250 million rock placement contract
Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. has been awarded a Letter of Intent (LoI) for a 50 per cent share in rock placement services in a €250 million (US$285 million) joint venture (JV) with Van Oord for the Nord Stream 2 project.
The contract scope includes sourcing rock from quarries in the Baltic region using multiple specialised fallpipe vessels (FPV), which are designed with a flexible fallpipe that can be lowered into the water under the vessel.
The JV will install rock at locations along the pipeline route to protect the pipeline and level the seabed.
The contract comes after Boskalis successfully completed the rock-placement work in 2010-2012 for the first Nord Stream project.
Contract details are anticipated to be finalised within a few weeks, with vessels will be deployed in 2018-2019.
A comprehensive Nord Stream 2 project update was published in the June edition of Pipelines International.
