DNV GL has issued a certificate confirming the continued integrity of the Nord Stream pipeline system for another five years.

The Nord Stream pipeline, which traverses the Baltic Sea, was designed and built to DNV GL’s offshore standard for submarine pipeline systems, and was issued with a certificate of full-compliance in October 2012.

Since then, Nord Stream engineers and DNV GL experts have worked together to develop the pipeline integrity system, verification and monitoring of its operating and maintenance procedures.

“DNV GL provides us with the highest level of expertise in the field of overseeing offshore pipeline operation,” Nord Stream AG Compliance Director Mario Nullmeier said.

“We are very happy to have this renowned international company verify the continuous integrity of our infrastructure which ensures reliable and safe transportation of natural gas from Russia to Europe.”

DNV GL Oil & Gas VP for Russia and Kazakhstan Nils Andreas Masvie said the companies had relied on development of collaborative working relationship.

“The key to ensuring that a new certificate was issued was the close working relationship between our two companies,” Mr Masvie said.

“We have been able to examine the key steps in the process and have visibility of compliance-related activities that enable DNV GL to confirm the Nord Stream Pipeline’s continued integrity.”

The Nord Stream pipeline has just achieved five years of successful gas supply to Europe, having transported a total volume of 182.1 bcm of natural gas between 8 October 2012 and 7 October 2017.

The twin 1,224 km offshore twin 42 inch (1,067 mm) pipelines run through the Baltic Sea from Vyborg, Russia to Lubmin near Greifswald, Germany connecting gas reserves in Russia and energy markets in the European Union.
